The County Government of Narok, through the Department of Environment, Water, Energy and National Resources in collaboration with stakeholders has come up with an ambitious plan to plant 43 million trees within the county. The initiate, earmarked for the 2021 long rain season through the national government, seeks not only to increase forest cover in the county in line with the national target of attaining 10% forest cover, but also ensure ecosystem resilience and integrity. A drive within the county revealed large swaths of agricultural land without trees. As at present, climate change impacts are increasingly being felt in the county and it affects multiple sectors of the economy including wildlife conservation, tourism, agriculture (crop farmers and livestock husbandry), water, health, education and security.
The initiative will offer an opportunity of promoting green jobs in line with the green economy, by engaging the community based institutions, youth, women and marginalized community members in tree nursery establishment, tree growing and nurturing.
